Human Resources Intern Day in the Life
To get a sense of what a typical day is like for a Human Resources Intern, take a look at a day in the life of Heidi who works in the Corporate Office in Willmar, Minnesota. This is an entry from her fourth week at Jennie-O Turkey Store.
7:30 a.m.
Arrive at work and start up my computer in my cubicle. I check my company email and calendar to see what today’s events are. I have a meeting scheduled with my supervisors, Robin and Elissa, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. This tells me that I need to complete my tasks mainly this morning.
7:40 a.m.
Start searching for college contacts to include in the database, which is one of many projects I am currently working on. I added the contacts to the appropriate areas, sorting them as I went along. I came up with a few rough numbers of the main contacts from each position. This will help with deciding other recruitment efforts and which resources to utilize. I am excited because the database is almost completed and it is one of my first projects that I have worked on.
9:15 a.m.
My supervisor checked in with me to see if everything was going ok. I continued working on the database.
9:35 a.m.
Look over job description questions that my supervisor sent to me yesterday. Look at current job descriptions to see what is already stated and then come up with new questions if anything is missing in the description. Write down thoughts about these questions and add suggestions to changes or additions.
10:50 a.m.
Make list of questions and discussion topics for my weekly intern meeting that is later this week with my supervisors. Briefly look over all projects that I have been assigned to see where I am at; which projects I have or have not started.
11:00 a.m.
Search examples of job descriptions on the Internet to see what other companies include. Look for skills, requirements, tasks and duties. I refer back to the current job description questions to brainstorm any new ideas.
11:50 a.m. Lunch break. Everyone typically receives a one-hour lunch.
12:50 p.m.
Return from lunch and get ready for my meeting.
1:00 p.m.
Meet with Robin and Elissa about their weekly recruiting efforts. I observe while they go through candidates files, resumes and applications. They discuss different recruitment advertisements for certain positions and also let me know what their schedule is for the rest of the week. This meeting is a chance for me to see what tasks and duties my supervisors are working on each week and how they are recruiting for certain positions within the company. Also if I have any questions about what I am currently working on, I can have them answered.
3:00 p.m.
Check email for new messages. I make a note about an email because I will have to pick up my own paycheck on Friday instead of normally having it delivered to my cubicle.
3:15 p.m.
Type up information for the development of the career page on the company website. I have been researching to make the Jennie-O Turkey Store website more user-friendly for visitors and I am now putting a few ideas together.
4:00 p.m. Add more questions about job descriptions that I thought of while I was in the recruitment meeting earlier this afternoon.
4:15 p.m.
Check my email and calendar to see what is planned for tomorrow. I have a plant tour tomorrow with other interns in the corporate office. I make sure I have everything ready before I leave for the day.
4:30 p.m.
Shut down my computer and put things away because it is already time to go home.
