Healthy Barbecue Ideas

Grilling on the barbecue is one of the most delicious ways to prepare a variety of foods. And it can definitely be a healthy option. Keep the following tips in mind.

Grilled Veggies

Grill ‘em up! Vegetables are a low-fat, tasty way to bring color to any dish. Toss them with a few teaspoons of olive oil and grill in a grill pan. For larger pieces, place them directly on the grill. Vegetables can char quickly, so make sure to watch them closely as they grill. Consider sweet potatoes*, carrots*, peppers, onions, mushrooms, and zucchini.

*Microwave for 4 to 5 minutes in a microwave-safe bowl with a little water before grilling.

Healthy Sauce Approach

Put your barbecue sauce directly on the meat instead of serving it on the side. You take in more calories and sugar when you dip the meat into the sauce. Get the flavor you want by brushing the sauce on the meat at the end of the grilling time, and then put the sauce back in the fridge.

Dessert on the grill? Yes!

Grilled fruit—like peaches and pineapple—are delicious. Wash, peel and cut the fruit into thick slices. Grill directly on the grates until lightly browned, then slice and top with a dollop of your favorite low-fat yogurt.
