Day in the life of a Human Resources Intern

Day in the life of a Human Resources Intern

To get a sense of what a typical day is like for a Human Resources Intern, take a look at a day in the life of Lucas who worked at the Corporate Office in Willmar, Minnesota. This is an entry from his ninth week at Jennie-O Turkey Store.

7:30 a.m.
Arrive at work, sign onto my computer, and check my email. I respond to any emails if necessary. I check my calendar for the day and make note of any meetings I need to attend for the day.

7:40 a.m.
Begin searching for college clubs to add to our college clubs database. We are looking for clubs related to our internships so that we can recruit for interns and entry-level positions through these groups. I add any clubs that are related to one of our internships to the database, including the club name and contact information.

9:00 a.m.
Attended a weekly meeting with my supervisors to go over what I have accomplished in the past week. This is a great time to receive feedback on my projects and determine what I should be focusing my efforts on for the next week. It is also a great experience to be leading meetings with HR professionals.

10:00 a.m.
After our weekly meeting was over, we began planning the Intern Presentation Day for the end of the summer. This event gives interns a chance to hear what the other interns have been working on over the summer. There will also be professional and skill-building activities throughout the day.

10:30 a.m.
Returned to my desk and sent out reminder emails to the interns to send me their completed surveys by next Friday. I also sent the Final Survey to the R&D intern since she will be leaving next week.

10:45 a.m.
Contacted a member from our I.T. team to confirm details about a training session that we will be having about Macros and Pivot Tables. I also contact the employees who will be participating in the training session with a few questions.

11:00 a.m.
Began a database for college newspapers at each of the schools that we recruit from. We are interested in advertising our internship and entry-level openings in these newspapers as another way to reach out to college students. I include the school name and contact information for the school newspaper, and sort each newspaper into groups based on which internships we typically recruit from that school.

11:30 a.m.
Lunch break. I enjoyed a lunch break outside with the Accounting and R&D interns.

12:00 p.m.
Returned to desk and responded to emails that have accumulated since I’ve been gone.

12:15 p.m.
Continued work on the college newspaper database that I started this morning.

2:00 p.m.
Attended a meeting to discuss the upcoming issue of Under One Awning, the company newsletter. This was a nice opportunity to understand the PR/Communications aspect of HR.

2:45 p.m.
Entered survey responses that I have received from several interns into the survey database.

3:00 p.m.
Reviewed applications and resumes of applicants who have upcoming interviews with Jennie-O Turkey Store. As the HR intern, I have been given the opportunity to observe job interviews and ask questions about the interview process for the company.

3:20 p.m.
Continued work on the college clubs database.

Checked my email one last time, shut down my computer, and left to go home.
